This should be your first information stop. This is the third annual edition of this report which measures the environmental impacts of the growing green economy.  Of special interest in this year’s report is the impact of the recession and how it affected an emerging green movement.  This 67-page report is an interesting and informative read.  And, even in a recession and down-turned economy, there are some positive and encouraging information…green business did NOT go away and in some cases are even thriving. In fact, the recession was the impetus for a stimulus to cut operating costs, thus encouraging the green movement and, environmentally speaking, making this year more successful than the previous one!

Small Business Opportunities in Government for 2011 and Local Resources to Help You Market to the Government

November is Entrepreneur Month.  If you needed an excuse to put on your entrepreneurial hat, here it is!  We’re going to talk about some great small business opportunities with the government and then follow that up with some local resources to help you get started or give help along the way.

Small Business Opportunities

FedSources recently released a report called FY2011 Top Opportunities Report which lists the top 50 opportunities for government contracts in 2011.  20% of those opportunities are specifically for small businesses. Each of the opportunities in the report has been selected based on total estimated value, and importance to the government.  According to the FedSources website, the 2011 budget is decreasing by nearly 5% thus upping the ante of the competition.  The title page of the report shows that there are:

  • 15 opportunities in the Department of Defense
  • 5 opportunities in the Department of Homeland Security
  • 15 opportunities in Civilian agencies
  • 5 opportunities in the area of cyber security
  • 10 opportunities specifically for small businesses

Local Small Business Resources

The opportunities are there for you to grab and small businesses will play a good size role again next year.  If 20% of the top 50 opportunities to do business with the Government are tailored for small businesses, you should be encouraged and move forward with  your plans to develop a product or service to ultimately sell to the Government.  If you have never done this before, where do you begin?  You begin with the free government information resources that are in your own back yard.  And, there is no lack of resources and they all are waiting to help you successfully market, espeially to the government.

Following are some resources in Tampa Bay and Florida simply because our offices are located there.  Should you need resources in other areas of Florida or in another state, the same or similar organizations can be easily found.

A good place to start is the Small Business Administration (SBA) which was created in 1953 as an independent agency of the Federal Government .  Similar to the SBA is the Small Business Development Center.  Both agencies are committed to assisting and protecting the interests of small business concerns and offer free start-up advice, training and counseling, targeted seminars and meetings, SBA loan programs. In addition to these, most larger counties have Economic Development Organizations that also offer counseling, seminars and workshops.  Contact your local EDO for schedules.  This is just the tip of the iceberg as there is an abundance of resources available and it is impossible to list them all. Hopefully you have enough to start putting your plans into place.

Let’s Talk Green

The word “Green” will probably go down in history as:

-       having the highest number of definitions

-       with the most diverse definitions

-       and being one of the most important environmental movements in the 21st century

When did green become going green?  In the past, if you referred to someone or something as “green”, then the assumption was that you were referring to envy, inexperience, illness or a color!  Then it all started changing – actually just a short decade ago – and green became “going green”.  Initially the conversations were limited to small groups of environmentally-minded people who no doubt grew frustrated at the lack of interest the rest of us were showing.  It just wasn’t feasible for the general masses as it was too expensive and/or the materials needed were not readily available.  And then, seemingly overnight, it all changed.

Now when you use the word “green” you are probably referring to products and innovations that protect the environment and ensure sustainability – the best use of the word green yet!  And, if you are planning to do business with the government, you had better be thinking green if you want your product to be the one that gets their attention.

GovGreen Conference:

This is a great conference that is coming up fast…GovGreen “Where government professionals find green solutions”.  The GovGreen conference is November 9-10 in Washington DC.  Some highlights of this year’s conference are:

-       the new eco-friendly Ford and GM automobiles

-       5 “top” speakers in addition to 85 speakers from 21 agencies in 30 sessions

-       connections to the government managers searching for green products and services
